About this destination

The Reynolda House Museum of American Art, nestled in the heart of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, stands as a testament to the fusion of art, history, and culture. Originally constructed in 1917 as the centerpiece of the Reynolda Estate, the mansion was transformed into a public museum in 1967. It now holds one of the nation's premier collections of American art, ranging from the colonial period to contemporary works. The museum's setting in a historic estate offers a unique, immersive experience that blends the beauty of art with the elegance of its early 20th-century origins.

This is a lovely look at the RJ Reynolds family life by touring the gardens and house. Mrs Reynolds helped design the home and unfortunately RJ died just a year after they moved in. It had lots of features for entertaining the children. Most impressively it has a 3 story pipe organ in the living room. The gardens are pretty and edible. We had lunch at the Tavern in the Village and it was quite good and had shady outdoor seating on various patios. It would be nice to have a docent give a tour. They have an 8 person minimum for a tour. There weren't as many paintings as I thought there would be.

Beyond the art and architecture, the Reynolda House Museum of American Art is surrounded by beautifully maintained gardens and a village. The gardens, originally designed in the 1910s, have been restored to their former glory, offering a peaceful retreat with walking trails, greenhouses, and a variety of flora. The Reynolda Village, part of the estate's original support complex, now hosts a collection of shops, restaurants, and galleries, adding a contemporary layer to the historical experience. Together, the Reynolda House Museum of American Art presents a holistic cultural experience that delights and educates visitors from all walks of life.
